Keyword advice
Thousands of companies spend a fortune on advertising and optimising their websites without researching the keywords first. Like any other form of advertising there is little point spending time and money without making sure that you are spending it in the right place.
Retailing tycoon John Wanamaker once said, “I know that half of my advertising doesn’t work. The problem is, I don’t know which half.”
Thankfully this is not the case with any form of PPC (pay per click) advertising on the internet as you can see exactly which keywords and adverts are giving you the best response.
Unfortunately this doesn’t help when selecting keywords as you can’t be 100% sure that the keywords you select will work once you have optimised your website for it. There are tools available to see how many people search certain terms and also how much competition there is for a keyword.
Even if there are thousands of people searching a term this does not necessarily mean that all of them are looking for what you have to sell for example: the keywords web design has over 7 million searches globally per month and over 1 million in the UK but if most of the websites you build are to local companies you may wish to advertise locally, as you can imagine competition keywords like web design are extremely high.
An alternative would be to try something like Website Designers Brighton as a keyword/phrase it gets 2,400 searches globally per month all of which are UK based this phrase still has high competition but is nowhere near as competitive as web design, I don’t know a web designer in the country who would not be happy with 2,400 extra potential customers per month.
More keyword advice;
Longer phrases are generally less competitive than short phrases and can reap great rewards, at a far lower cost to your business than the more traditional shorter phrases.
Be realistic when choosing your keywords if you have a large advertising budget and massive resources you can choose whatever words and phrases you like but if your budget and resources are limited look at the best way to spend them.
